All I have to say is, “Oldham County … you are awesome!” What a great season of running we had in 2012 for the Oldham County Grand Slam. Some of our steady crew repeated as champions, but we had some new people emerge as champions too. Young and old, along with entire families, came out to participate in each event in record numbers. On Sept. 22, The Apple Patch Scenic Road 5K drew another record crowd on a perfect day for running. We had a great time.
Apple Patch throws a great party! Each year they invite our local TV weather personalities out to walk in the event, and it makes for a delightful morning. A number of weather forecasters attended. Among them were Andy Weingarten, Lauren Jones, Jeremy Kappel and long-time community favorite Ken Schulz, who kept everyone laughing.
The start of the race was spectacular as the throng of runners and walkers left the line to enjoy the scenic course near Brownsboro. Shannon Knabel won the women’s divisions, securing her standing as the overall female champion of the Oldham County Grand Slam.
This means that she not only finished first in the Apple Patch event, but she completed all four races that make up the Grand Slam with the lowest cumulative time. Shannon raced well in all the races, finishing first every time.
John Campbell wrested the championship hold away from Don Wright, who has been our repeat champion for the last few years.
John led the way to the finish line and crossed first in the final leg of the Grand Slam to claim the overall male prize for the four-race series.
John and Shannon were awarded coveted Louisville Slugger Grand Slam Championship bats in front of an appreciative crowd during the Apple Patch awards celebration.
Our corporate cup winners for 2012 were:
- Team With Most Participants: Baptist Hospital Northeast
- Team With Best Cumulative Time (Large Company): Baptist Hospital Northeast
- Team With Best Cumulative Time (Small Company): Champion Chevrolet/Buick/GMC
- The Oldham County Police defended their title as Grand Slam champions in the Public Servant’s Challenge division, followed closely by the Ballardsville Fire Department.
Congratulations to OCPD! Watch out for those firemen next year!
The Grand Slam is a four-race series that begins at Crestwood Baptist Church in May, followed by the Oldham YMCA 5K in La Grange in July in August brings the Fastline 5K in Buckner, and finally, the Apple Patch event wraps up the Grand Slam in September. It’s a summer long opportunity for Oldham Countians to get fit, and each benefits a great cause.
The organizing team who puts the Grand Slam together would like to thank our sponsors: Baptist Hospital Northeast, Fastline, The Oldham Era, Oldham County On-Line, The Bank Oldham County, Champion Chevrolet Buick GMC and East & Westbrook Construction. Please make it a point to patronize these community minded organizations.
We’ll see you next year for the first race at Crestwood Baptist on May 18, 2013.
If you were a Grand Slammer this year, ask a friend to join you. If you’ve always thought you’d like to try it. Now’s the time to begin to head that direction. You can do it!

The results from this year’s Apple Patch 5k are now posted online. We apologize for the delay; there were some data mismatches that forced results to be recalculated manually. There may still be errors. If so, please email race director Christine Vaughan at cvaughan(at)applepatch(dot)org.
Due to some technical difficulties, we are still matching times to bibs for some runners from the Apple Patch 5k. We’ll have them posted as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.
In the meantime, you can see photos, overall winners and top three finishers from each age group in this week’s edition of The Oldham Era.
The Fastline Fun-raising 5k results are now posted online. About 185 runners and walkers participated in the third leg of the Grand Slam! Congrats to male overall winner Chad Youngblood and female overall winner Shannon Knable, who has won all three legs of the women’s division!
